Do you even know any more?

/ Blog, Mindset

Of all the things I hear from physicians wanting to leave clinical medicine, there’s one that hits home more than any of the others:

“I’m not fulfilled in my current job, but I don’t know what to do next because I don’t know who I am anymore.“

Can you relate?

What To Do If You Feel Like You Don’t Know Who You Are Anymore

Most physicians have dedicated their entire adult life to mastering their craft, but in the process many become disconnected from their body, spirit, and emotions.

If that’s something you’re feeling at the moment, here are some tips to reconnect with yourself:

  1.   Exclude burnout as a cause of disconnection.

If you think you may be burned out, consider engaging a therapist, or taking some time off to heal and restore.

  1.   Restore connection to your body.

Activities that stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system are helpful in slowing us down enough to notice what we’re feeling.

Take a few deep breaths.

Go for a walk in nature.

Stroke a pet.

Cuddle with a loved one.

Take a long shower and feel the water on your skin.

Move the body (dance, yoga).

  1.   Pay attention to what gives you energy.

How does your body feel when you come alive and feel energetic? What are you doing? Who are you with?

  1.   Follow your curiosity.

What interests you?

What are you reading? (that you find enjoyable and interesting, not doom scrolling!)

Don’t limit yourself to work-related activities.

  1.  Complete the following sentences:

10 things I enjoy doing are…..

10 things I don’t enjoy are…..

My three most important values or guiding principles are……

Get to know yourself like an old friend you haven’t seen in 10 years. Notice, stay present, stay curious and judgment- free. Surprise yourself. Be patient with this process. It takes time to get to know yourself again.
