A Simple Exercise To Discover What Else You COULD Be Doing In Your Career
Ever feel like you’re the only one who wants to transition out of clinical medicine?
You’re not.
Here’s one way to open your eyes to what’s actually happening out there…
A Simple Exercise To Discover What Else You Could Be Doing In Your Career
Most of our colleagues who have pivoted to non-traditional careers are on LinkedIn.
To give you an idea of what they’re doing–and what might be possible for you–, go to LinkedIn and try the search below.
- Type the name of a colleague with whom you trained into the LinkedIn SEARCH bar and review their profile and work experiences.
a. Notice where they started out, what they’re doing now, and if they have additional degrees or certifications.
b. If they can do something different, so can you!!
2. Search the alumni from your allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
a. Type the name of the School into the SEARCH bar and Click on View Page:
b. Select Alumni
c. Search by title, keyword, company in the search box. Also insert start and end year. Apply filters of where they live, where they work, what they do, what they studied, what they are skilled at, and how you are connected (1st, 2nd,3rd)
For example :
I searched Duke University Medical School→ View Page→ Alumni→ 7,398 resulted→added filters industry, 2007-2009, Business development, and living in the United States→ 15 results
d. Scroll down to review all the profiles and click on the ones that interest you.
3. Search the health care system of interest
- Type the name of the Program into the SEARCH bar.
- Click on the health system.
- Click on the View page.
- Click on People.
- Type “MD or “DO” into the “search employees by title, keyword, or school” search box
- Then filter by where they live, where they studied, and you connection (1st, 2nd, 3rd).
For example, when I click on “Duke University Health System” and “people”, I see 9,415 employees-> enter “MD” in the search box, and the search results decrease to 287, and filter by “living in the United States” and went to “Duke medical school”, the results decrease to 43.
If you come across a colleague who is doing something you find interesting or different, connect with them to learn more!
